Talk: Bringing sustainability to smart cities using standards
Information and communication technology (ICT) is becoming an integral part of cities’ responses to recurring sustainability challenges as well as global emergencies such as the Covid‑19 pandemic. As cities grow more reliance on ICTs other digital technologies, there is an urgent need to raise awareness on the environmental performance and sustainability aspects of their applications. It is estimated that the ICT sector accounts for 1.4% of overall global emissions. To achieve a successful digital transformation taking into consideration the climate targets set in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals, we need to focus on not only limiting the emissions of the ICT sector but to achieve net-zero within the sector. ITU-T Study Group 5 “Environment, Climate Change and Circular Economy” has developed international standards that can provide the guidance necessary to set a clear pathway towards net-zero and other environmental measures for improving sustainability in smart cities around the world.
