Nick Meynen

Geographer, conflict expert, investigative journalist, author and since 2008 a professional environmentalist

Nick Meynen founded the “economic transition” team at the European Environmental Bureau, Europe's largest environmental NGO network, where he worked as senior policy officer for systemic change. After a decade there he jumped to his home town Leuven, where he now manages the cities' ambitious climate program.

His book “Frontlines. Stories of Global Environmental Justice” was warmly welcomed by Naomi Klein & Tim Jackson. He writes for media, gives talks at TED & other events, and makes videos with people like professor Kate Raworth from the Doughnut Economy. Nick loves to connect stories to the fundamental flaws in our economic system, with the aim of contributing to the new narrative needed to turn a crisis into a change opportunity.

The future of Europe's extractivism in a multipolar world

Geopolitical shifts lead some to urge for a mining renaissance in Europe, as part of a wider "strategic autonomy" strategy. Combined with the megatrend of eroding democracy within the whole Western World and declining stocks of easily available resources, the number of conflicts over resources and their intensity is already on the rise, also in Europe. Starting from stories from the real world, happening at some of the 1000s of Frontlines that our extractivist economy keeps opening up, Nick connects the bigger dots that few people in Europe wish to hear - and comes to radical conclusions about the different scenario's for Europe in the years ahead.
